Spy shots reveal new 490cc twin for KTM’s middleweight naked bike, set for 2027 launch as a step above the 390 Duke
Spy shots confirm the KTM 490 Duke prototype runs a parallel-twin engine. This marks the shift from the single-cylinder platform that powers the 390 Duke. The development fills the gap in KTM’s lineup with a sub-500cc twin ahead of a 2027 launch.
Platform Shift
KTM is developing a new engine to replace the long-running 390 single-cylinder family across multiple models. The parallel-twin setup delivers smoother power delivery than the thumpy single. Production will likely happen through Bajaj in India, which supports cost control for global markets, including Europe, under A2 licence limits.

This move aligns with KTM’s strategy to broaden its middleweight offerings. The 490 slots between the 399cc 390 Duke and the larger 790 models. It targets riders who want more refinement without jumping to bigger, heavier bikes.

Engine and Rivals
The prototype shows a compact parallel-twin with twin exhaust ports. Expected output sits at 55-60 hp with a displacement of around 450-490cc.
Key Data Points:
- Engine: Parallel-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC
- Power: 55-60 hp expected
- Position: Above 390 Duke (44 hp), below 790 Duke
- Launch: 2027
- Market: Global with strong India focus via Bajaj
Compared to the current 390 Duke’s single, the twin promises linear torque and reduced vibrations. It competes with models like the Aprilia Tuono 457 in the Indian performance naked segment.
Beyond the Spec Sheet
This twin reduces the cost of ownership through better refinement and potentially higher real-world efficiency on highways. Riders in Indian cities gain smoother low-speed performance that reduces fatigue on daily commutes and reduces the impact of constant gear shifts on urban congestion. The spec sheet omits how the compact engine enables lighter overall kerb weight and easier handling in traffic, which changes rider confidence and encourages longer ownership cycles beyond pure performance metrics. The platform also underpins future variants like the RC 490 and Adventure models from the same base, expanding KTM’s volume in the 3-4 lakh price band.
