The luxury carmaker cites client demand and changed regulations as it continues production of V12-powered models alongside its electric Spectre

Rolls-Royce has abandoned its target to become an all-electric brand by 2030. The company will continue to offer cars with V12 engines for the foreseeable future.

This shift matters because it shows how even ultra-luxury makers adjust strategies based on actual client orders rather than fixed timelines. The first electric model, Spectre, stays in the lineup, yet V12-powered vehicles remain available.

Client Demand Shapes the Lineup

CEO Chris Brownridge noted that for every client who prefers an electric vehicle, another chooses a traditional option. He stated that the V12 is part of the brand’s history and that the company builds what clients order.

Rolls-Royce launched the Spectre in 2022 with an original plan to end V12 production by 2030. At that time, the company expected strong electric uptake. However, sales of the Spectre fell 47 per cent in 2025 to 1,002 units.

Changed Regulations and Market Reality

Global legislation has evolved since the original pledge. The previous prediction was based on a different set of circumstances. Rolls-Royce now follows a demand-led approach instead of a strict electrification deadline.

The V12 engines receive updates to meet current and upcoming emissions standards, including Euro 7. BMW Group, the parent company, supports continued production of these powertrains.

This decision affects the broader mobility ecosystem in the ultra-luxury segment. Production at the Goodwood facility expands to handle bespoke orders for both powertrain types.

Beyond the Spec Sheet

The continued availability of Rolls-Royce V12 allows owners to maintain long-distance journeys with the signature smooth power delivery they expect. Clients gain access to vehicles that match their preferred driving feel without compromise on range or refuelling infrastructure.

Running costs remain predictable for those who operate these cars across continents, where charging networks remain limited in the ultra-luxury segment. The reliability of the established V12 powertrain ensures consistent performance in daily use and on special occasions alike.

Behaviour among high-net-worth individuals shows a divided pattern, with some opting for silent electric drive while others retain the familiar engine note and presence during movement.
