CEO Stephan Winkelmann axes first EV model, labels EVs an expensive hobby amid low customer demand in the luxury segment
Lamborghini has cancelled its first fully electric model, the Lanzador. CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed the decision in recent interviews. The move ends plans for a production all-electric vehicle that began as a 2023 concept.
This development matters now because it reflects slower adoption of battery-electric powertrains in the ultra-luxury performance segment. Lamborghini first EV plans targeted a 2028 or 2029 launch, but weak demand prompted the cancellation at the end of 2025.
Shift to Plug-in Hybrids
Lamborghini now focuses on plug-in hybrid technology. Models like the Revuelto and Urus SE already use this approach successfully. The Lanzador will likely arrive as a plug-in hybrid instead of Lamborghini’s first EV. This keeps the engine sound and performance characteristics that buyers expect.

Customer Demand Drives Decision
Winkelmann stated that interest among Lamborghini customers in full EVs is close to zero. He described pursuing EVs as an expensive hobby with high investment but little return. The company consulted dealers and owners before making its decision.
Lamborghini’s first EV cancellation aligns with broader trends in luxury performance cars. Buyers prioritise emotional aspects like engine noise over zero-emissions running. Hybrids offer reduced emissions while retaining traditional driving feel.
Infrastructure for ultra-fast charging remains limited in many regions. High-performance EVs demand significant battery capacity, which adds weight and affects handling. Plug-in hybrids avoid these issues for now.
Beyond the Spec Sheet
Owners can travel long distances without range anxiety on highways. Access to remote locations stays reliable with fuel backup. Running costs drop slightly thanks to hybrid efficiency, but fuel remains the primary factor for spirited drives.
Behaviour stays consistent as drivers enjoy familiar engine response and sound during weekend outings. Movement in urban areas benefits from short electric-only segments, yet overall reliance on petrol continues. Reliability is higher with proven hybrid systems than with untested full-electric setups in this segment.
