India Launches Indigenous 30 kW Integrated Drive System for EVs

MeitY unveils WBG-based system developed by C-DAC, IIT Madras and Lucas TVS to support compact passenger EVs and reduce import dependence

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launched an indigenously developed 30 kW Wide Band Gap-based integrated drive system for electric vehicles on 2 March 2026. MeitY Secretary S Krishnan unveiled the technology at IIT Madras in Chennai.

This launch matters now because India aims to strengthen domestic power electronics for EVs. The 30 kW integrated system targets the growing compact passenger vehicle segment and fleet mobility. It supports localisation efforts under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Development Partners and Technology

The 30 kW integrated drive system was developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing in Thiruvananthapuram. IIT Madras and Lucas TVS collaborated on the project under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology.

The system uses Wide Band Gap technology with Silicon Carbide MOSFETs. It integrates the electric motor, inverter and other components into a compact, liquid-cooled unit. This design improves efficiency and power density.

Relevance to India’s EV Segment

This integrated drive system fits compact four-wheelers and shared mobility platforms. These vehicles form a large part of India’s electric passenger segment. Local production of this component reduces dependence on imported drive systems.

Manufacturers gain access to a ready-for-commercialisation solution. The integrated approach reduces assembly complexity. It also supports faster adoption in urban and fleet applications.

Impact on EV Prices

Localisation through the 30 kW integrated drive system can reduce component costs over time. Reduced imports and lower foreign exchange outflow for key EV parts.

OEMs may pass on savings to buyers in the compact EV category. Fleet operators benefit from lower acquisition costs for electric vehicles. However, exact price reductions depend on scale and integration timelines.

The 30 kW integrated drive system enables more reliable daily movement in compact EVs for urban commuters. Families access affordable electric options for city travel and short inter-city trips.
