Kia India launches its first made-in-India electric MPV, the Carens Clavis EV, blending affordability, range, and family-friendly features to shake up the EV market

Kia India has entered the mainstream electric vehicle market with the launch of the Kia Carens Clavis EV, priced at an attractive Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

This made-in-India electric MPV is Kia’s first locally manufactured EV, following the premium EV6 and EV9 models. With bookings opening on July 22, 2025, it aims to capture the attention of families seeking space, affordability, and eco-friendly performance. But what makes this vehicle stand out, and how does it stack up in a competitive market?

What Sets the Kia Carens Clavis EV Apart?

The Kia Carens Clavis EV offers two battery options: a 42 kWh pack with a 404 km range and a 51.4 kWh pack boasting an impressive 490 km range (ARAI-certified).

Both variants deliver 255 Nm of torque, with motor outputs of 99 kW or 126 kW, ensuring smooth and responsive performance. Its i-Pedal system allows single-pedal driving, while four-level regenerative braking enhances energy efficiency. Fast charging is a highlight—10% to 80% in just 39 minutes using a 100 kW DC charger.

Inside, the Kia Carens Clavis EV features dual 12.3-inch displays, Level 2 ADAS for enhanced safety, and over 90 connected features for a tech-savvy experience.

Its design retains much of the ICE Carens Clavis’ look but introduces subtle EV-specific styling tweaks. Available in four variants—HTK+, HTX, HTX ER, and HTX + ER—this 7-seater prioritizes comfort and practicality, making it ideal for Indian families.

How Does It Fare Against the Competition?

The Kia Carens Clavis EV enters a growing electric MPV segment supported by the government, with JSW MG Motor India set to launch its M9 electric MPV later in July 2025. Priced competitively, Kia’s offering undercuts premium EVs while offering a longer range than many rivals in its class.

However, some critics argue the pricing could have been lower by Rs 3–4 lakh to drive higher sales volumes. Still, its blend of range, fast charging, and family-oriented features positions it strongly against upcoming competitors.

It marks a bold step for Kia India, blending global EV expertise with local manufacturing to offer value and performance. Its launch signals a shift toward accessible electric mobility, potentially encouraging more Indian consumers to embrace EVs.

With its robust feature set and competitive pricing, the Clavis EV could reshape the market, but its success will depend on how it navigates rising competition and consumer expectations.
