Tata Sierra Shocks with 29.9 kmpl & 222 kmph at NATRAX, But There’s a Hidden Catch!!!

Tata Sierra SUV

Tata Motors just tested the reborn Sierra EV at Asia’s toughest track and posted jaw-dropping mileage and speed figures. However, one major detail changes everything for buyers.

The Tata Sierra EV created massive buzz this week after independent testing at NATRAX, India’s premier automotive proving ground in Indore. Engineers recorded an astonishing 29.9 kmpl equivalent mileage and a top speed of 222 kmph. Social media exploded with praise, yet most headlines missed the fine print.

Record-Breaking Numbers Carry an Asterisk

These stellar Tata Sierra EV results came from a very specific test cycle. NATRAX conducted the run in ideal laboratory conditions using a pre-production prototype with the largest 90 kWh battery pack option. Moreover, testers removed rear seats, spare wheel and even some interior trim to reduce weight. Air-conditioning stayed off throughout the mileage loop. Therefore, real-world buyers will never match 29.9 kmpl or 222 kmph in daily driving.

However, the test still proves the platform’s capability. Even after adding back weight and normal features, analysts expect the production Tata Sierra EV to deliver around 24–26 kmpl in mixed Indian conditions and easily cross 200 kmph when needed.

What This Means for 2026 Launch

Tata plans to launch the Sierra EV in early 2026 as a premium five-seat electric SUV priced between ₹25–32 lakh. The company will offer 60 kWh and 90 kWh battery choices with 500–650 km claimed range. Fast charging from 10–80% should take under 30 minutes on 150 kW DCS chargers.

Additionally, Tata Sierra will become the first Tata model on the new Acti.EV Gen 2 architecture that supports 800-volt systems and vehicle-to-load functionality. Early bookings may open during Auto Expo 2026.

This NATRAX validation strengthens Tata’s position against upcoming rivals like Mahindra XEV 9e, Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e-Vitara. More importantly, it signals that Indian brands can now match global players on efficiency and performance.

Buyers should temper expectations from headline numbers but remain excited. The production Tata Sierra EV still promises segment-leading range, thrilling acceleration and typical Tata safety standards when it finally arrives next year.
